Melbourne Grammar School Construction Surveying Project
Construction surveying in Melbourne for the Centre for Humanities at Melbourne Grammar School, delivered across retention, excavation, structural concrete, and QA support within a live school environment.
Construction Surveying for Melbourne Grammar School
Base Surveys delivered construction surveying support for the Centre for Humanities at Melbourne Grammar School in Melbourne. Working with CDL, Kane Constructions, and FRP, our team provided accurate set-out, structural verification, and ongoing survey coordination across a constrained live site from early works through to handover.

Project Overview
Base Surveys was engaged to provide surveying services for the Centre for Humanities at Melbourne Grammar School, a major education facility built within an operational school environment. The project includes a multi-level building with 20 classrooms, a 220-seat amphitheatre, student and staff facilities, and landscaped external areas designed to sit within the school’s heritage setting.
The development also targets strong environmental outcomes, with 5 to 6 star performance goals across the project. Our role covered early works through to structural completion, requiring close coordination between civil, structural, and builder teams across a busy and restricted site.
Scope of Work
Base Surveys supported the project across critical early works, retention systems, structural concrete, and verification stages.
Early Works and Retention
Set-out and calculation of retention piling, including positioning and verification against design intent.
Set-out support for bulk and detailed excavation works.
Accurate positioning of shotcrete walls and retention systems.
Ongoing recalculation and adjustment of set-out data in response to site and design changes.
Structural Concrete Set-Out
Full set-out of structural concrete elements including footings, walls, columns, and slabs.
Continuous support during concrete pours with real-time set-out and verification.
Coordination of interface points between structural elements and builder requirements.
On-site survey management through to structural completion and handover.
Builder Support and Verification
Miscellaneous structural set-out to support site-driven construction requirements.
As-built pickups and verification surveys for QA documentation, progress tracking, and downstream trade coordination.
Ongoing survey input to support site sequencing and buildability.
Key Contributions
- Robust Survey Control
Base Surveys established and maintained robust survey control across all stages of the build, helping protect accuracy from retention piling through to final structural works. This was especially important on a project where early-stage alignment affected every downstream element.
- High-Precision Set-Out
Our team provided high-precision set-out and ongoing verification across retention, excavation, and concrete structures. Consistent checks helped reduce rework risk and gave site teams confidence during critical activities.
- Constant On-Site Presence
We maintained a constant on-site presence during major construction stages, particularly concrete pours. That responsive support helped ensure set-out remained practical, clear, and usable in real time.
- Close Coordination
Close coordination between CDL, FRP, and Kane Constructions helped align civil, structural, and builder requirements. This improved delivery flow across multiple interfaces inside a live school environment.
Project Outcome
Accurate Structural Delivery
Base Surveys’ involvement supported accurate delivery of complex retention systems and full structural set-out across the Centre for Humanities project. Consistent verification and early issue identification helped reduce rework risk and improve coordination between project teams.
Strong Survey Continuity
Reliable as-built data supported QA processes, project documentation, and smoother progress through later stages. The result was strong survey continuity across a logistically constrained build delivered within an operational school setting.
Why It Matters
Complex Project Capability
This project highlights Base Surveys’ capability to deliver construction surveying in Melbourne on complex institutional projects where precision, responsiveness, and coordination all matter. It also shows our ability to work effectively in live environments where access, safety, and staging need careful control.
Sequencing and Site Support
For builders and contractors delivering education, civic, and multi-stage construction projects, strong survey support needs to do more than mark out works. It needs to guide sequencing, support structural accuracy, and stay aligned with changing site demands from start to finish.
